Viruses…

Posted by diep9ss in R e f l e c t i o n s ♥

Viruses:
- are small software programs that spreads from computer to computer, corrupting or deleting the information you have on the hard disk of your computer.
- you get it by emails, IMs, pictures, greeting cards, and audio and video files.
- you also get it by downloading a file  or program on the Internet.
- it gets a “piggyback” ride from the file/program you are using.
- everytime you use that file/program, the virus runs!
- to avoid it, use an Internet Firewall and update your latest antivirus softwawre.
- needs a host program to run.

Trojan Horses:
- a computer program that does damage to your computer when you run it.
- it can also erase your hard disk.
- does not replicate
- types such as Remote Access Trojans (RATS), backdoor Trojans (backdoors), IRC Trojans (IRCbots), and keylogging Trojans.
- can be both types.
- if file is affected by a  Trojan Horse and detected by an antivirus software, you should DELETE the file.
you know your infected when your computer starts acting weird, such as:

- your CD-ROM drawer opens and closes automatically
- the pc screen flips (upside down or invert)
-  the wallpaper or background settings change by itself
- your printer prints documents or messages automatically
- computer browser suddenly goes to unknown site.
- your windows color + screen saver settings change by itself
- your mouse starts acting weird: it might reverse its button functions, its pointer might disappear or leave trials, or even move without you moving it.

Worms:
- can run by itself without a host program
- are “malicious software applications designed to spread via computer networks.”
- you get it by opening an email attachment or just an email
- once installed, it makes copies of itself and would make an attempt to fill the LAN with DoS (Denail of Service) data transmissions.
- can be fought against by antivirus software.
- can be prevented by using email programs that has spam filters built in, i.e. Outlook Express and Windows Hotmail.

Phishing:
- also called carding or brand spoofing or identify theft.
-  to prevent phishing, use an anti-virus, an anti-spyware software and a firewall, all updated regularly.
- a scam to get your information and money.
- gets it by emails, pop-ups, IMS, and email attachments.
- appeares professiona, business-like from “real” companies and businesses such as banks, Amazon, and Ebay.

Body Image.♥

Life is a waterfall,
we’re one in the river,
and one again after the fall.

Swimming through the void
we hear the word,
we lose ourselves,
but we find it all…”

- Aerials by System of a Down.

Supposedly you go down the street to take a walk and as you enjoy the busy air of the city, you noticed a stand that showed all sorts of newspaper and magazines. You went to take a look and noticed a gorgeous woman on the cover of Vogue or Cosmopolitan. Every bit of her was perfect: her shiny mane, her smooth tanned skin, and her voluptuous lips. “What really makes you sexy?” or “Look and feel good in 30 days!” are some of the headings you’d see on the front. As a guy, you’d just shrug and move on, but for a lot of females, they either buy it with a slight hope of becoming like her or blame themselves with criticisms like, “I’ll never be as pretty as her” or “Why can’t I have the cheekbones and the body? I mean, I get zits and I’m just so… fat.

A lot of our minds are influenced by what the media says, whether being skinny is in or having model face’s features. This clearly is the media’s fault. You can see evidence on magazines, billboards, and advertisement online or out on the streets. Do you see girls that have long and thin legs or muscular, healthy ones (no t saying that having naturally long, thin legs aren’t healthy). The media sets out a standard idea of the beauty of women, which causes problems for females, especially teenagers.

In fact, today’s fashion models weigh 23% less than the average female,10 and a young woman between the ages of 18-34 has a 7% chance of being as slim as a catwalk model and a 1% chance of being as thin as a supermodel.11 However, 69% of girls in one study said that magazine models influence their idea of the perfect body shape,12 and the pervasive acceptance of this unrealistic body type creates an impractical standard for the majority of women.” – says healthyplace.com

The media purposely sets this out because it increases the desire and the quality of the product, or so viewers think. As I had said before, this creates problems especially in teenage girls such as anorexia and bulimia. Getting out of being bulimic or anorexic aren’t easy. A lot of people died from it. These two nasty diseases are formed by the encouragement of the media.

I can’t really blame a person when she doesn’t want to eat anymore if everyone or most of the people are telling her that “oh, I love your figure. I would die for it.” Partly it’s our lack of awareness that this is going to inspire that person to stop eating, to encourage he/she. In our school I don’t think that anybody had suffered from bulimia or anorexia. I don’t think anybody that pass me every single day in the hallways are skeleton-skinny or whatsoever. Nobody I know had suffered from it nor has passed away, and I never want that to happen as I hope you don’t too.

Personally, I never had been affected by the media completely. I like people because of their own uniqueness. Why waste your time trying to be what people want you to be when you know that it’s your own FACE, your own BODY, and your own very being? Okay, so maybe people don’t want you to be this. But it indirectly presses pressure on you whenever you see a pretty girl or guy laughing about something or just simply walking their way to some place . It makes you feel bad. So instead of feeling bad, why not feel good? People want to feel good. Then accept what you are and who you are and what you look like because in truth, we don’t want any skinny looking people with the same features (only with different colors on them like different eye colors, hair, skin, etc) walking around.

The bigger the package, the greater  the gift. So embrace yourself : ] .

A Day In The World’s Shoes

Posted by diep9ss in R e f l e c t i o n s ♥

I knew it was going to an interesting day on November 6, ‘08 because we didn’t have school that day. In fact, it was more interesting than I thought it would be. I never actually thought that Crossroads and EastMeetsWest would come to our school and talk to us about the conditions of poverty and what it does to people. I never even knew that 20% of our population are in extreme poverty. Well… I knew that there would be numbers, but still.

At first we were watching our school team dancing. It was alright, I guess. I liked the 2 videos about every second 3 kids die though, and how JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE was on it : D. Then we go do 2 activities that includes running our butt off trying to get water and resources for our teams. After that we had to drag out butts WAY up to the 4th floor. I was in room 401. It wasn’t really nice considering we had this game where people stick ‘jobs’ on your back and other people have to signal you what it meant. Guess what I was.

A poor Afghan worker.

I don’t even LOOK like one. People tell me that I look indonesian or cambodian or something but oh my god, an Afghan?! I am GOING TO KILL YOU TADGH.

And Kashing. And Nancy. And Sonya. And loadsa other people. Even Mr. Ada said that I could sell opium for a living. Way to rub it in, Mr. A.

So anyway we went down and had lunch in which did not suit everyone’s taste. I liked the potatoes and the rice and then we went down to have David, the founder(?) of Crossroads to talk to us for a while. And then we did the paperbag making game, which was fun even though I was stuck with a buncha guys as my family.

So anyway, I’m actually thinking that there’s no point spending tons of paragraphs telling you guys about what I did when you guys did the same, so I’ll start on the 3 things that made an impact on me the most:

1.  The Paperbag Making game. Out of all the activities that we did, I liked this the most (partly because I didn’t have to run) because we actually get to live in a small slum, ACTUALLY doing the work with the same gluey paste that the people in poverty made. I also liked how we talked about it afterwards. It was really, really nice to listen to other people’s responses and knowing that they actually think about this a little bit more deeper. It makes me happy how this makes everyone in the school have the deeper meaning in their heads, knowing that it’ll somewhat possibly drive them into the thought of changing the world into a better place rather than be a, i don’t know, an actress? What I was thinking that day after the game was that when you get to live in a place full of poor people, you don’t care about how embarressed you’d be infront of other people because you’re too busy to make it through the day for you and your family. Personally, if I was to be in a family under a very low living condition, I’d feel pretty embarressed myself. But when I actually played the game, I was too busy to make things done: to get the food, the rent money, the sanitation, the school, etc.. to actually notice it. What’s so very more important is my family, not what others think of me.

2. Anastascia (is that how you spell her name?) told a story of her teacher. I’m sure you remember it, and this one thing stayed in my head and had an effect on me: Knowledge is Success. It’s the way to get out of poverty. I find this so true. Not alot of people have the chances to receive education the way we have it. We’ve got a family, money, and a house. Not alot of people don’t have that. And as Mr. David tells us the story of how this woman think that poverty is just a cycle, repeating over and over again, affecting the lives of her generation and other’s, I really think that education is the most important thing to get out of it. I really do.

3. The food. Okay, so I know that not alot of people liked it. It was only rice, boiled cabbages, carrots, and potatoes. But I kind of did. It was simple. It wasn’t KFC or Lotteria or Sarpinos or that really good caesar salad that I really like from Al Frescos… But hey, it was simple and it was actually healthy. I could like eat 3 of those stuff, but then I thought, I eat like an elephant. And that isn’t only because that I have a big appetite, but because I have the option of having so much more food to eat. Then again, not alot of people do.

4. Okay so I know that you’re supposed to have 3 things, but Mr. David’s story of how Crossroads was created made an impact on me too. More than the food one above. Things just… sort of go together for him. I hope that it’ll come off as ‘easy’ and ‘together’ to me as it was for him. Alsssooo, when he told the story of the woman and her cycle idea, she also questioned about why she deserved this and other people who had better lives do. It really moved me. She did nothing wrong, but it just gets her and she’s just stuck in this … life that she doesn’t deserve. Alot of people, MILLIONS of THOUSANDS of people deserve so much better so much more.

So in conclusion, I really liked the day. I thought that it was very productive and that we had alot of fun and learned alot of things at the same time yesterday. I reaaallly hope that we can get our money to 60,000 USD so that those people in Vung Tau or Dong Nai (I think it’s Dong Nai…) can receive a new building with GOOOD facilities. Including hygeinic toilets, unlike the flying ones. I think that’s probably the end of what I want to say about A Day In The World’s Shoes.
